Category A entitlement yet never ridden...

Category A entitlement yet never ridden...

I noticed something strange on a photocard licence presented by a guy turning up for his CBT this week. Take a look. Notice anything odd?

Yes, he appears to have full Category A entitlement, from 19.1.13, but he's never ridden a bike before!

If you look in the final column, though, you will notice that it says "79 (tri)". This is the restriction column. Restriction class "79" is any other restriction and the letters "tri" mean "tricycle". As he holds a full car licence (Category B) and has held this prior to 19.1.13 (in this case since 26.10.10) he is entitled to ride a trike or a quad, vehicles that were previously covered by category B1. As this category no longer exists and trikes are classed as category A vehicles, the entitlement is now shown there - but as a restriction on the category those vehicles appear under!

His provisional entitlement to ride a Category A motorcyle will be shown on his paper counterpart. When he passes his full bike test then the photocard licence will be updated and the restriction removed.

The automatic entitlement to ride trikes/quads that used to be granted on passing the car test has been removed as of 19.1.13 and now anyone wanting to ride a trike needs to pass a motorcycle test (Category A) on a 2-wheeled machine unless they have a physical disability.

Remember when checking driving licences to pay close attention to anything in column 12 as that restricts the type of vehicle in any given category that can be driven/ridden under that licence!
